God is Neurodivergent

Just a quick random thought…

Neurodivergence refers to the natural variation in how our brains function. It encompasses a diverse range of cognitive and neurological differences that deviate from what is considered typical.”

A huge part of the reason that neurodivergent people find life in our society so difficult is that there is an assumption of neurotypical-ness. Most people assume that most other people function in broadly the same way that they do, which can make life really inconvenient for those of us who don’t.

But God doesn’t think like most people do either.

In Isaiah 55:8, he famously declares

my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways

God’s emotions function very differently from people’s emotions, so differently that many authors either argue that God doesn’t have emotions, or they use different words to describe them (“affections” / “themotions”).

In other words, God is neurodivergent. He doesn’t fit in with the way that “normal” people do things.

And put that way, we start to see that the whole idea of “neurotypical” people assuming that others should be like them is really dumb.
